An Introduction To Mandrel Bending

A Mandrel is a tool that is used to bend metallic tubes without forming wrinkles or flattening the tube in the process. Advancement in technology has made it possible to achieve high degree of precision in Mandrel Bending. Mandrel Bending Process:

For support on the interior side, a steel rod or a set of steel ball bearings is inserted into the tube during the bending process. This kind of systematic support reduces the chances of tube breaking or appearance of wrinkles at tube ends. However, the Mandrel bending process can be explained as follows:

• The process starts by loading the tube into bending machinery. A Mandrel Bending machine consists of a tungsten or carbide pressure die, a wiper, mandrel and a clamp for holding the metal tube tightly during the process.

• The clamping block and the forming die are responsible for holding the tube while loading it in the machine.

• After this, an appropriate amount of mechanical force is applied on the metal tube so that it starts bending. During this action, the tube is firmly held by the clamping block.

• The tube is gradually pushed against the other die (also called as pressure die). This is intended to give it the desired shape.

• During the whole process, the metal pipe is pulled over a Mandrel, which is a kind of ball or rod. Mandrel helps in giving an internal support to the pipe while bending and thus prevents it from getting any wrinkles, creases or cracks.

In some other processes, a metal tube is simply pushed through rollers which bent it into a perfect curve without any wrinkles. However, the Mandrel Bending process is popular and widely used, because it causes the tube to retain its firm roundness and impeccable finishing.
